## How the finish time is estimated

- Distance to the finish at the latest report, divided by the speed made good towards it (VMG): the last 24 hours, which smooths out tacks and gybes, weighted 30% with the last 4 hours.
- The range widens with the time left (6% at best, plus 2.5% per day), more on the late side than the early one: weather slows boats down more often than it speeds them up, and the lap of Guadeloupe is rarely sailed at full speed.
- No estimate for a boat not heading for the finish (VMG under 2 knots), out of the rankings or retired.
- An estimate, not a weather forecast: a front, a ridge or a breakage can move it by hours. It corrects itself at every report.
